PRIVACY POLICY
The Board of Directors sets the following privacy policy for the Silicon Valley American Marketing Association (SVAMA). This policy is effective July 1, 2002.

The SVAMA values you as a SVAMA member or “friend” (SVAMA “friends” are defined as non-members who have expressed interest in SVAMA events and/or have requested to receive event announcements by sending a subscribe notice to svama@onebox.com) and takes your personal privacy seriously. The SVAMA Privacy Policy describes information we may collect and explains how we use the personal information we collect from you. Please read the following to understand our views and practices regarding personal information, and how they pertain to you as you join our association, use the features on our Web site, sign up to attend events, attend events, join event notification email lists, or take part in SVAMA-conducted research activities.

This statement discloses the current SVAMA privacy policy. If we make any substantive changes to this policy, we'll announce it on our Web site. If we decide to use personal information in a manner different from that stated at the time it was collected, we will post such changes to our Web site prior to implementing them.

SVAMA does not sell names, addresses, telephone numbers, or email addresses from mailing lists it maintains or from lists it collects from members and SVAMA “friends” for the purposes of communicating on the Web, registering for events, or conducting surveys and other research. Occasionally, we may rent or trade the mailing addresses of our members and “friends” for occasional use to select third parties, that is, to sponsors. We do not allow third parties who rent our mailing lists to have direct access to the lists, but require that mailings be conducted by a bonded mail house only. We do not rent any of our email lists or telephone numbers except to our partners in order to improve our services and offerings.

In administering SVAMA online, event and research activities, Board staff or committee members may periodically monitor activity on SVAMA systems for security system checks.

Information We May Collect and Use

Web Site Visits

The primary function of the SVAMA Web site is to support and service SVAMA (and when appropriate, AMA) activities delivered to our members and SVAMA “friends.” Information collected from the SVAMA Web site is not sold to third parties. The exception to this policy is that our parent organization, the American Marketing Association (AMA), may make member information available to third parties, provided the member elected to receive third-party advertising or other promotions at the time of their registration, that is, he or she checked the appropriate box on their AMA member application form.

When you visit the Web site, we collect and store information to help us improve our offerings and services. The information includes:

The address (IP) of your computer or Internet provider
The date and time you accessed our site
The Internet address of the Web site that referred you to our site
Our Web site contains links to external Web sites not maintained by the SVAMA. We cannot be responsible for a visitor’s privacy when such a person visits outside sites. Please consult the privacy policies of those Web sites should you have questions regarding their use.

Event Registration

We ask both members and non-members who register for our events to provide their name, email address, postal address, telephone number, and credit card account information. We collect this information for billing purposes mainly, but we frequently use the data we collect to track the effectiveness of our programming and event promotion campaigns. Such transactions are handled over a secure server.

Discussion Groups

Participants in electronic discussion groups have the ability to collect the names and email addresses of other participants. If the moderators of particular mailing lists determine that a participant has violated the policies of that list, they may, at their discretion, drop that participant from the list they moderate.

Promotional Campaigns

From time to time, we conduct promotional campaigns to inform the Silicon Valley community of our services, to attract new members, or to highlight events. At such times we may use selected comments to help describe our services and offerings. If we use member or non-member comments as collected in our feedback forms, they will be quoted anonymously and will in no way disclose who supplied the comment or any other personal information about that person.

Market Research

Occasionally, we conduct research campaigns to gather information to help us improve our offerings and services. At such times we may use selected comments from members of the community to help describe our services. If we use member or non-member comments as collected in our feedback forms, they will be quoted anonymously and will in no way disclose who supplied the comment or any other personal information about that person.

Event Notification “Opt-in” Mailing Lists

We ask members and non-members who are interested in our events to subscribe to our event notification lists by providing their name and email address, that is, to “opt-in” to our mailing lists (Members and non-members who register to attend our events are automatically added to such lists.) We track responses regarding our events and to our mailing lists in order to help improve our services and offerings. We also request this information of members in order to assist us in answering inquiries and providing information related to membership. Occasionally, we may send event notification communications to third-party mailing lists. If a member or non-member desires to remove his or her name from either of our event notification email lists, he or she may elect to “opt-out” at any time by following the unsubscribe directions at the bottom of all SVAMA event announcements and electronic communications or by clicking here.

Online Membership Directory

We offer SVAMA members the opportunity to “opt-in” to our exclusive membership directory by adding or updating their contact information in a directory that is available to members online. We ask members who are interested in being listed and promoted in the SVAMA online directory to include their name, telephone number, fax number, email address, mailing address, interest skills, and company name. If a member or non-member desires to remove his or her name from our online membership directory, he or she may elect to “opt-out” at any time by following the unsubscribe directions.
